get_prompt
Fetch one customer prompt's stored template text and description by its name (as shown by
list_prompts). This returns the raw stored template — the exact text
you'd edit — so you can inspect a prompt before revising it, or copy it into a personal or team
space the credential can manage and refine it.
You can read any customer prompt you can see, including one from your organization's shared catalogue. A prompt you can't see reads as not found — its existence is never revealed.
The name is caller-relative: bare selects personal content for a standalone credential and the
organization catalogue for an organization credential; me/name selects the represented
member's private organization space, and <team>/name selects a bound team.
Platform prompts such as apistash/agent-doctor are fetched with native prompts/get and are not part of this customer-content management tool.
Parameters
| Parameter | Type | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
name | string | Yes | The prompt to fetch, named exactly as list_prompts shows it. |
Response
| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
name | string | The prompt's name. |
description | string | The prompt's description, when it has one. |
content | string | The stored template text (raw {{name}} placeholders, not filled in). |
arguments | array | The prompt's declared parameters, when it has any (each { name, description, required }). |
Example
{
"name": "launch-copy"
}
Result:
{
"name": "launch-copy",
"description": "Product launch announcement",
"content": "Write a launch announcement for {{product}} aimed at {{audience}}.",
"arguments": [
{ "name": "product", "description": "The product being launched", "required": true },
{ "name": "audience", "description": "", "required": false }
]
}
Errors
Each failure carries a precise code in the response. A domain rejection — a not-found or a capability denial — is returned as a tool result with isError: true, so the agent can read the code and self-correct; malformed arguments and server faults are JSON-RPC protocol errors.
| Code | Cause | Delivered as |
|---|---|---|
prompt_not_found | No such prompt is visible to you — it doesn't exist or is out of scope. | tool error (isError) |
capability_denied | The credential lacks the Prompts capability required for this read. | tool error (isError) |
invalid_arguments | The arguments are missing or don't match the input schema. | protocol error (invalid_params) |
internal_error | An unexpected error occurred. | protocol error (internal_error) |
Notes
- To copy a catalogue prompt, read it here, then use
create_promptwith a name of your choosing — including itsargumentsif you want the same parameters. - The
contentis the raw template with unsubstituted{{name}}placeholders. A nativeprompts/getfills those in from supplied values; see Prompts → Arguments. - To find the name to pass, use
list_promptsfirst. - Reading a prompt counts as one tool call against your plan's tool-invocation allowance.
